I started squatting in knee wraps and i'm loving it. Not really sure how much I get out of them but i'm pretty confident in at least 20KG. Technique feels so much better with knee wraps. The knee joint also feels a lot more stable with knee wraps.
I can definitely see a reason for knee wraps raw now. I don't see requiring more skill as a reason not to have it a part of raw. Sports require some skills it's just the nature of sports.

gp, Interesting point you bring up about knee wraps allowing you to train without pain. Does anyone else find squatting in wraps remove some pain? All i've heard about them, and as you alluded to, is the pain from cranking them. That being said i don't think you need to crank them to get use out of them. My one limited experience from wraps was that it brought me into a better squatting position. Slightly more upright, a tad narrower, and i felt much more powerful. But i haven't used them enough or heavy enough to have a real verdict yet. As far as an "arms race" goes, everyone ends up with the same "best" piece of equipment anyway. Look how many PA lifters fork out for rehband knee sleeves (myself included). I don't think it would put off new lifters either. Again, look at how many novices have said knee sleeves. Even before their first comp. I am an example of this.

Geez, we wouldn't want skill interferring with a sport now. That's why I put in the caveat clause "amongst other things". It would be folly to assume that skill isn't involved to improve raw lifting i.e. refining technique, but it surely is a more even test of strength between competitors than if wraps were added to the equation. Basically this will be a debate about different divisions - raw, raw with wraps and equipped (substitute unequipped for raw if you will).

they allow me to squat and alleviate ITB pain at the same time!

@julz, yes this is a discussion about raw vs raw with wraps. I'm also curious as to why a lot of feds went raw with wraps, and ipf didnt. I'm not advocating one vs the other though, just interested in the reasoning.
For the record, I've done my one and only comp in PA. Before trying knee wraps, i thought they had no place in raw. I mean, i still don't think they do, but then again, i don't see how its that much more different from my belt (which i wouldn't want to give up) which is allowed.
Anyone in the know know why ipf went raw to not include a knee wraps?

When raw was about to be introduced in IPF, the decision was going to be either no knee protection at all or sleeves. I created some documents for Robot Wilks to push for knee sleeves showing that just about every other sport allows knee protection, and that most weightlifting gold medalists used either knee sleeves or a wrap of some sort. The commonwealth powerlifting federation actually sanctioned raw before IPF did, and their raw as going to be belt only, no wrist wraps or any sort of knee protection. I for one would not lift if knee sleeves and wrist wraps were banned. I'd have no problem with knee wraps in competition, but prefer lifting without as it means everyone is on a level platform, as squatting well in wraps is an acquired skill, and getting the most carryover requires competent wrappers, and a good tolerance to pain.

I reckon I get about 40kg out of my knee wraps, and these are used Inzer Iron-Z's (red and black ones). Waiting on some THPs and signature gold wraps I ordered and will see how I go with them.
I've found them useful for training as a raw lifter. Training sheiko means I reserve their use for the second squat day of the week (Friday).

Thanks for the insight Paul - Do appreciate it. I have no problem with the 'skill' from learning to effectively use knee wraps - its just like anything else. I don't like the idea that you must tolerate the pain of a very tight knee wrap to be competitive. But i guess you can't have one without the other. jk - i assume you are an ipf lifter? Would you prefer to see them in raw? If so why/why not?

have any of the PA lifters who want knee raps for raw considered competing "equipped" (minus suits) to be able to use them in competition?

I believe Meerkat is planning on doing just that in August.

Before the introduction of raw 2 years ago people used to frequently compete raw + wraps. This was the standard introduction to powerlifting comps at Melbourne Uni.

I did my first few comps raw then moved to raw with wraps which at the time was the normal way to introduce to lifting. Then i borrowed an old suit and eventually bought some suits none of the new tight ones fitted so still use hand me downs. That was the usual progression so im sure lots of the raw guys must get curious and want to wrap.
Im still unsure if wrapping to train for raw will help in the long run or just cover weaknesses that will we re exposed once you take them off.
As for raw with wraps comps it not going to happen in ipf so we may as well let that idea go. Id personally love to lift raw with wraps as i feel a lot mor confident that im not going to crumble with them but thats just due to relying on them and underlying weaknesses as shown in my video analysis post. Real raw is raw unless they want to allow a bandage type wrap without the stopping power and spring of our wraps.
ATP Strangulators far and away are the best wrap imo but again thats not going to happen in IPF.... GPC anyone?

I'd be tempted to do an equipped comp at some stage just to try it out but i don't want to see knee wraps introduced to 'raw' lifting. I think once you start introducing more equipment you lose the raw aspect of lifting. I'd be weaker but couldn't care less if they banned wrist wraps and belts to. It's an even playing field so the rules don't really affect comp results. And its way easier for the average joe to get into if theres no equipment required

Don't worry Webby they're not going to introduce knee wraps in raw. I'm interested in equipped too, heck I'm going to Norway to watch the Worlds this year. I've had discussions with Nathan Baxter about it and realistically you have to give yourself several years to become comfortable and proficient with the equipment. That's why I think the introduction of raw is a good thing and may not kill of equipped lifting like everyone thinks. Now you can still do raw comps and be competitive while you learn to master the equipment. In the past you either had to hold off competing till you were ok or risk frustration with bombing or getting thrashed in comps.
