My gym has excellent quality Eleiko olympic lifting bars and two sets of the olympic training plates (http://www.eleikosport.se/en/46/product.aspx?ac=3001121-25&cn=1). However due to the thickness of the rubber plates I've lately been running out of room to fit the plates and collars onto the bar, most especially for deadlifts and squats.
Also having more weight out towards the ends seems to make the olympic bars much more whippy, which is not a good thing, especially walking out a heavy squat. Am I being far too OCD over this or is it a good idea to consider buying a couple of the eleiko/ivanko steel 25kg plates used in competitions?

You don't need competition calibrated plates for training. If you have the spare money lying around they are cool, but no actual need for them. Just about any thin plates will do, really.

Sorry, perhaps I should have mentioned I am also interested in those, because the calibrated ones are obviously quite expensive. Whereabouts could I pick up cheaper thin plates? PS I live in un-zud.

Something like these (http://www.flexcart.com/members/elitefts/default.asp?m=PD&cid=436&pid=4978), or these (http://www.ironedge.com.au/store/20kg-rubber-weight-plates.html) would be ideal.

I would say you could get metal Eleikos for the same from Get Strength at a similar price to stuff shipped from Aus or US? At least you can get Eleiko at reasonable prices unlike the jacked up eel scam we have going on.

www.hartsport.com.au/documents/catalogue/218.pdf$3 per kg. This is what I would get if I had your pleasant problem. That, or if noise was an issue while deadlifting, the Ivanko 7 hole copies IronEdge makes. There was a cheaper version floating around, but I can't find it anymore. They are all made in China. You can buy them direct from Alibaba but minimum order for this stuff is usually 1 tonne.

Yeah but how much are Hart etc. going to charge for shipping to NZ? I'd just get Eleikos for $7/kg.

The Iron Edge rubber plates I think you can get mid-300s on the bar. Maybe ask SP or the PTC Perthers as they have some. As for NZ idk google? I believe at one stage Get Strength were selling Ivanko so I'm not sure what happened there

These guys are the NZ Ivanko distributor www.bluefitness.co.nz/ivanko.phpWebsite is rubbish, I'd ask them for a quote on the 25kg Ivanko powerlifting plates, and compare that to the cost of Eleikos from Getstrength. or if budget doesn't stretch to comp plates, there are plenty of basic metal plates available which would be thinner than bumpers, get 25's not 20's as they will generally both take up the same amount of space on a bar. eg www.bernsportfitnessequipment.co.nz/our-brands/york/york-olympic-plate.htmlThe handle plates are annoying to train with and take up more room on a bar. I found that once you have a few plates on the bar the balance can be off as the handles mean the weight is no even distributed on the plate

We use the IE rubber weight plates at PTC and they are great.
The handles makes them easy to use compared with the IVANKOs.
We have no issue with balance, first I've heard of that.
