Since its the fashion of the moment, and realisticly probably the smart move for my short ass, I'm seriously considering swapping to sumo in the new year like a certain Russian midget freak...
My question is: what will happen to me? Will I get AIDs? Leprosy? Develop a taste for plaid? Become addicted to sniffing air-freshener? I'm scared.

6 views and nobody with a sense of humour...
The thought has now come to me to possibly even swap sooner, anybody got any guesses on how long it would take to adapt to sumo?

Takes a long time to get used to typically.
I am about to start pulling conventional again after about 7 years of sumo. Going to be fun.

I'm going to play around with some technique work over the next couple of weeks and the decide after that. Expect lots of "am I doing this right?" vids.

Do a lot of these everyday to make the transition smoother: www.exrx.net/Stretches/HipAdductors/SideLunge.html - adductors (and associated knee pains) are often where people feel it straight away when switching over. You will need bigger stronger quads and glutes also. Front squats and BB hip thrusts. Everyone's different wrt how long it will take, depending on where they come from and their strength balances. I got +20kg almost within 2-3 weeks (from 175x5 conventional to 195x5 sumo). Some need to go backwards a little bit before they get better. Be prepared to be patient. Watching Belyaev over and over again really helps my technique!

Watching Belyaev over and over again gives me an erection.
I'm going to be doing some SS bar box squatting as part of smolov with hopes of some hip strengthening and toughening.
I hate front squats though, I mean really hate them.

I've got the figures from Bret Contreras' EMG studies.
From one of the studies, a 140kg low box squat had much lower mean and peak glute activation (20% / 103%) compared to a 140kg back squat (35.6% / 114%). Tests on various other subjects which hooked up EMG to all of the hip musculature showed similar results - box squatting produced the lowest activation of all the squat variations. Zercher squat was the best.
If you were wanting to hit the hips, BB hip thrust is where it is at.
I've got the full results if you want them - there's over 30 pages of data.
