Hi all
Just thought I'd share some info for you all and to pass on to others that you know who are subject to anti-doping rules.
By now, everone should be aware that pre-workout supplements are notoriously risky as they have traditionally contained DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine, also known as methylhexanamine or the proprietary name geranium), which has banned in-competition since around 2009.
Things were made somewhat less risky as a result of the TGA listing DMAA as a scheduled poison in August last year (thereby prohibiting its use in supplements). The FDA in the US did something similar. AS a result, all of the pre-workout supps (at least the ones legitimately imported into Australia, and not parallel imported from dodgy countries) been reformulated for the Australian market. These are DMAA free but they are not without risk.
DMAA was very potent and supplement manufacturers quickly looked for alternative stimulants to use in their pre-workout supplements. A lot of the new ingredients are exotic and some are designer stimulants with questionable legal status.
One such example is methylsynepherine (listed in ingredients labels as "methyl synepherine HCL"). This is found in Viking Protein's preworkout supp "Before Battle". It was consumed by a St Kilda player, Ahmed Saad, who is now facing a length stint on the sidelines.
I can share this info since it has now been reported in mainstream media.
I know many of you well enough to know you appreciate the risks of supplements already, but it is important that this information is shared with everyone you know. Powerlifting already receives an unfair share of the spotlight with respect to doping and I would hate to see anyone else fall victim to inadvertent doping through supplement use.
