Hi Ladies,
I guess I just wanted to start the discussion on nutrition and diet.
Do you diet for comp? Do you struggle with gaining weight or losing it?
Do you use calories, macros, eat what you feel like?
I'm hoping we can start getting some more support for this going, as I personally have found it really quite tough being female and a powerlifter...and trying to lose weight.

Thanks for starting this thread Jess, something that has been on my mind! I have struggled with my weight and powerlifting. On the one hand it has liberated me from feelings of guilt and shame over my weight and appearance because I now focus on strength and health. However, I still find it difficult to manage my weight and it’s something I feel I’m constantly battling lately, especially with comps coming up. In Jan 2010 I weighed 105kg and after joining a boxing gym I managed to get down to a comfortable 67kg. I was doing a lot of conditioning at that time which I really enjoyed, as well as general strength training with my personal trainer. Once I started powerlifting, I really struggled to fit the conditioning aspect in with my programs. It was probably a mixture of adjusting to the new style of training and also I had some personal stuff going on and just wasn’t as motivated. In addition, I found I was hungrier than ever! So increased energy intake combined with less energy output has seen me shift from 67kg in June last year to 77kg. I wish I could say it’s all muscle… As I said – scale weight isn’t my priority anymore, except when it comes to comp time because I compete at 72kg and prefer not to have to cut a drastic amount of weight. However, it IS a priority to reduce body fat both for health reasons and frankly, I do want that super ripped body! Getting lean whilst also getting strong is tough :/ There was a time where I knew what worked for me in regards to losing weight...but it seems my body has changed, whether it's just I'm getting older, or powerlifting or whatever, and it doesn't seem to be responding how it used to! I think my biggest issue is consistency, mostly because I've had quite a big year on a personal level and it's pushed my nutrition aside. I feel like I'm back on track now....perviously tracking my calories and keeping an eye on my macros worked for me, so that's what I'm trying to do now, I just need to be consistent. In terms of diet - I just try to stay away from processed foods and I'm a big believer in mindfulness, listening to your body, eat when hungry, don't eat if not hungry etc. I was thinking I might start a food log in this section for some accountability..don't want to subject the boys to that Would definitely be great if we could get more discussion around this!

Wow Bri, that's amazing - i didn't know it was that much :-)
I've dropped from 86kg in Jan 1 2013 to a consistent 78kg. I dropped to 74.95kg for Oly Lifting Nationals in July. I'm looking to do a bit of a consistent drop of maybe 1/2 kg/week for the rest of this year, as my ultimate goal is to get into the 72kgs.
I have always been about the calories, but with a focus on increasing strength for the next few months, i'm looking at macros and targetting my carbs around training. On my training log i'm doing a bit of a daily diet macros thing.
I have been a bit misinformed for the past 5 or so years, and have pretty much stuck to 1200calories since then. It was recently brought to my attention that is probably not enough for a powerlifter, let alone a Power and Oly lifter. So, my goal is to increase calories to something a bit more reasonable - i'm targetting 1750cals/day at the moment, with a higher carb content on training days.
It's a new era for me..this maintaining weight thing. I'm a bit excited!

Damn I wish I could cut weight at 1750 calories!! I normally stick below 1500, averaging around 1350-1450- depending on activity levels this lets me either drop or maintain weight. Dropping/gaining weight isn't really an issue for me, but I've been gaining and losing intentionally for years. I just get sick of never eating, haha.
