hi guys, okay so lets get the ball rolling for women in strength sports. Im rae and I have recently qualified to compete at the world championships in Russia for powerlifting. What I want to know is how you other female powerlifters got into strength sports and what motivates you to do it???

Hey Rae I started out at a boxing gym....started deadlifting/squatting/benching with my trainer and realized I was better at lifting things than I was at punching them Decided it would be fun to test myself in a comp, got in touch with Ben at GCB and have been addicted ever since....my motivation isn't necessarily to break records or win medals - as someone who has previously struggled with my weight and health and fitness, my motivation is knowing without a doubt that I am constantly getting stronger. I also love the powerlifting community, everyone is awesome

hey all, just joined this the other day, first time poster and all that so i started crossfit in august last year, got addicted and then early this year decided I needed to lift my strength up and have moved to strength based programming with 2 to 3 wods a week. While most of the people I train with are into oly lifting, I fell in love with Powerlifting and I went in my first low key comp last year... i'm preparing for my first comp of the year at the end of this month and pretty damn excited cause i've come so far in just 6 weeks already and I want to keep focussing on powerlifting more so than crossfit at this stage. I love what it's doing for my confidence and my body but mostly because I love being strong I really want to be competitive at a national level cause i thrive on it. I'd love to get to know more chicks into strength sports cause the more inspiration the better!

Was that you at the Strength Club comp yesterday? If so then good to see you compete. Would be great to see you continue to compete. Think about Nats next year. There were 6 who went across this year from WA and hopefully more next year. I was the ref not in appropriate IPF attire.

Hi Julz, Yep, that was me alright! I'm definitely hooked and intend on competing in the rest of the WA events this year and also nationally and beyond! I made a few rookie errors alright but I'm stoked with the total I got. Got my new maxes to train off and no more crossfit lol. Realised I couldn't have borken the nat record anyway cause I haven't been a PA member for 6 months yet. It was gerast to have a few girls competing and good to see some of the guys especially at the end. I'm not 100% on who you were as I was only watching for your flag colur

Ok, I hope this is ok to ask here (cause yes I am a NOOB) how does the qualifiying work - as in those totals on the PA website... you need a particular total to qualify for international and national , but are there rules about waiting periods, and the times in teh year in which you have to qualify??
sorry if this is something everyone knows already...

For nationals the qualifying totals have to have been hit in the year of the comp or the preceeding calendar year. I think it is the same for international comps but you have to be selected on top of qualifying.

hi gals,
I come from a background on gymnastics and then rugby union, so a good solid strength base. Jan 2012 i started Olympic Weightlifting, after 3 months of crossfit, and managed to meet my coach, Nick @ StrengthSportsGym while training with my Oly coach. I started with Nick in about October last year and first competition in December last year. Like Bri, i come from a weightloss background and am loving the focus on increasing my strength and focusing on what my body can do, rather than the tireless task of calorie counting and kilo dropping.
Cheers, Jess
